Ask five locals to name the best Saint Augustine beaches, and you may get five answers before anyone agrees on lunch.

That is the pleasure of this stretch of Florida coast: each beach offers a different kind of day.

For an all-around favorite, Anastasia State Park earns the nod for its broad shoreline, dunes and breathing room.

But the right choice changes if you want restaurants nearby, an easier family outing or a quieter place to walk.

This Saint Augustine beach guide starts with what matters most: how each beach feels once your feet hit the sand.

Anastasia feels surprisingly removed from the bustle of the historic district, even though the two are close enough for one outing.

Its protected dunes and surrounding salt marsh give the beach a wilder character than visitors might expect from a popular destination.

There is room to settle in, watch the surf, and remember that a beach day need not be complicated.

The trade-off is that a state park visit takes a little more planning.

Expect an entrance fee, check current park conditions before you leave, and bring what you need instead of counting on nearby shops.

For travelers who value scenery over convenience, that modest effort is precisely why Anastasia stands out.

Saint Augustine Beach, meanwhile, is the easier answer for families hoping to combine sand time with a casual meal.

The area around the Saint Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier provides a recognizable meeting point near beach access and local businesses.

It is a practical place to begin if your group cannot agree on how long to stay by the water.

Some can linger on the sand while others take a break from the sun without turning the day into a production.

Anastasia wins for an escape; Saint Augustine Beach wins for an easygoing day with options close at hand.

Those are different virtues, and neither needs to be dressed up as a universal answer.

Across the water from the historic city, Vilano Beach brings a different rhythm to the coast.

Its setting near the inlet appeals to beachgoers who enjoy watching the water change, passing boats, and the shoreline itself.

Conditions near inlets can be unpredictable, however, so admire the view without assuming every stretch is suitable for swimming.

Pay attention to posted warnings, and give the tides and currents the respect they deserve.

Vilano is a good choice when the beach is part of the adventure, not the entire plan.

Farther south, Crescent Beach tends to appeal to people seeking a slower pace and a long shoreline walk.

Its quieter feel can be especially welcome after time spent navigating the busy streets around Saint Augustine's major attractions.

Do not mistake quieter for empty, particularly on pleasant weekends, when parking and beach access can still require patience.

Arriving earlier often leaves more room in the schedule for the part everyone actually came to enjoy.

Butler Beach also deserves a place in the conversation, not only for its shoreline but for its history.

The community is linked to the struggle for beach access for Black residents during segregation, a past worth remembering while visiting.

That history adds depth to a place many visitors might otherwise see only as another patch of sand.

Among Florida beaches, Saint Augustine's coastline rewards visitors who look beyond a single postcard view.

The beaches share Atlantic surf, but access, surroundings, and nearby amenities can make two outings feel entirely different.

Before heading out, check current parking rules, access conditions and whether lifeguards are present at your chosen location.

Where vehicle access is permitted, rules and conditions can change, so never treat an open stretch of sand as an invitation to drive.

Keep clear of dunes, give shorebirds space, and be especially thoughtful about lighting during sea turtle nesting season.

These habits protect the natural features that make a visit memorable in the first place.

Families may favor the convenience of Saint Augustine Beach, while solitude seekers may feel more at home farther south.

Visitors chasing the most distinctive natural setting should make time for Anastasia, even if they explore other beaches later.

The best beach is the one that lets your particular day unfold without a fight against the setting.

Start with Anastasia; if you can choose only one, then let curiosity pull you toward the rest of our coast's wonderful beaches.

Did we not mention your favorite?  Please add yours in the comments below, and we promise to consider it, as we are always seeking new adventures and great beaches.

Interesting Facts
  • A city burned, a fort held: During a 1702 siege, English forces burned much of St. Augustine, but the Spanish garrison and townspeople sheltered inside the Castillo de San Marcos, which the attackers could not capture.
  • A refuge with a militia: Established just north of the city in 1738, Fort Mose was the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what is now the United States. Many residents had escaped slavery in British colonies.
